Research profile

Mitochondria energy metabolism and energy coupling; transport of ions and metabolites in mitochondria; calcium homeostasis in normal and malignant cells; oxidative stress; p66Shc and aging; mitochondrial deseases; regulation of the plasma membram calcium permeability, capacitatve calcium entry; metabolic control at the cellular and sub cellular levels; cytoskeleton and mitochondrial organization; the role of mitochondria in apoptosis.

Current research activities

  • regulation of calcium homeostasis in electrically non-excitable cells. The role of mitochondria in control of Ca2+ influx through CRAC (Calcium Released Activated Current) channel in Jurkat cells. The role of PAM (Plasma Membrane Associated Membranes) in capacitative calcium influx;
  • effect of mitochondrial genetic defects on cell structure, mitochondrial energy state and calcium homeostasis in human osteosarcoma (cybrids and Rho0 cells) and human fibroblasts (primary culture);
  • the role of p66Shc protein in oxidative stress and aging;
  • metabolic and genetic mitochondrial stress in human osteosarcoma cells - effect of selenium;
  • effect of quinolone antibiotics (e.g. ciprofloxacin) on Jurkat cell viability, mitochondrial DNA damage, cellular energy metabolism and calcium homeostasis;
  • role of mitochondria in apoptosis: mechanism(s) of cytochrome c release from mitochondria; the role of contact sites between the outer and the inner mitochondrial membranes; fatty acids and their derivatives in apoptosis; dependence on chain length and the degree of unsaturation; pro- and anti-apoptotic effects of N-acylethanoalmines;
  • mechanisms of the protonophoric and ionophoric functions of fatty acids in mitochondria: role of anion carrier proteins of the inner mitochondrial membrane; fatty acids as openers of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PTP).
